Daniel Borrow
Daniel Borrow (b. 2001, United Kingdom) is an emerging artist living in London who graduated from Fine Art BA at Central Saint Martins in 2023. Since graduating Daniel has consistently improved on his painting practice, participating in a series of exhibitions across the UK, including group shows such as; ‘In The Corner Of My Eye’ by Fresh Salad at the Koppel Project, ‘Water, Oil, Honey’ by Pistil Collective at Crypt Gallery and ‘Open Call’ by ‘phony.’ in Brighton, UK. This year Daniel collaborated with his friend to curate and showcase work in ‘Fit’ at Greatorex Street.
My painting practice is an evolving visual vocabulary of symbols, codes and motifs, capturing moments of intensity related to my life experiences. I explore themes of desire, music, and sexuality, referencing niche pop culture, fun, and the relationship between invulnerability and vulnerability, concerning superficiality with the psychology of self-presentation - some symbols remain intentionally indecipherable. Visually, my work is shaped by an interest in taste levels, particularly those of the 2010s in the UK and its resurgence. The era's ‘swag’ aesthetic connects to my fascination with how perception can be manipulated through branding, icons and self-presentation. A common theme is the coexistence of abstracted emotional and sonic environments, reflecting my experience of music altering or intensifying memory and feeling. Part of my process is ranking and organising subjects to reveal details and hierarchies - spreadsheets and diagrams (both drawn and digital) often act as preliminary studies, then appear in the work.
