Visual Art
Sali Bilici
Studio in Artspace 5: Sali x is a self-taught artist who transitioned from the garment manufacturing industry to the practice of visual arts as a means of catharsis after her fibromyalgia diagnosis in 2016, at the age of 46. This shift not only provided her with an outlet for emotional expression but also served as an important process for navigating the complexities of her condition and fostering self-acceptance.
Drawing from her knowledge base of garment manufacturing materials and processes inherent to the materials, she creates communicative art through multiple disciplines including sculpture, installation, poetry, music and performance. Each piece of work is essentially a conversation which explores the links between trauma and chronic illness and how in turn these impact self-identity and mental health. The particular focus is on physical symptoms such as chronic pain, chronic fatigue and brain fog as well as emotional and psychological symptoms. She is currently studying Bsc Psychology at the Open University to further her exploration and deepen her understanding of these issues.
